....the end.

We tried, we failed.
We had a spark, we had a connection but it wasn't enough
We loved each other greatly, but it wasn't to be
Now you are not burdened by my criticism, now u are free
I will always care, but this time from far away
God wasn't in our life and that was my fault
You tried to get me closer but I wasn't mature enough
I tried to care for you but you weren't secure enough

Somalia - A Capitalist's Dream?

Until very recently Somalia has been living some economists' dream. Somalia has no central government, no police, no army, no taxation system, etc...Thats right, until the Islamic factions beat out the US backed "moderate" military factions a couple of months ago Somalia was an absolute anarchy/chaos (anarchists like to differentiate between the two words) for more than ten years. Even though the Islamic military faction is in control now, they have not tried to govern the economy of the country yet, they are still working on controlling the country against other opposing factions. So for now the free market economy rules Somalia. This was like an accidental experiment that no one really set up but are intrigued to see the results of it. Imagine over 10 million of people living within a country's border with no actual country to run them, no laws to follow, and no rights or obligations. Although initially businesses flourished (read the articles about business in Somalia at the end of this blog), the cost of security and the lawlessness was too much on the people. Many people are begging for a government (even a corrupt one) at least there will be some guidelines. Gun markets are flourishing with no care to whom and what is being sold, the seaports are open for anything (we will get to the this part later), pirates are roaming the seas and has attacked and captured many commercial vessels in International waters.

Capitalism can be aruged is great for business growth, competition, services, imporvements, innovations, etc. The less restrictions by the governemnt the better for business as long as they do not compromise the common societal good or human rights. There are many reasons however that these government restrictions are important if not vital. Laws, enforcement of those laws, protection of its citizens from each other and from across borders, making sure the corporate sect is kept in check (corruption), collecting taxes for common services such as the police, the army, infrastructure, etc. are crucial for the long term survival of the country.

Which brings me to my next point, if you think Iraq is the new hub of terrorists because of the American presence there you would be wrong. Iraq is a hotspot for actual fighting, but there are no more real safe havens anymore in the world (Afghanistan and Pakistan come close but not fully) except for Somalia. A historically anti-American country (remember the whole Black Hawk Helicopter thing...yeah they don't like them) with seeds of extremism among them (Bin Laden is an idol to a lot in this region) and no government makes it a great situation for training camps, weapon smuggling (remember the airports and seaports are free of security), all you need is money to start an extensive operation here (Osama Bin Laden and friends got lots of that) and voalla!!! there you have it, Somalia will become the new Afghanistan. This is why it is so worrisome that the world is not paying attention to Somalia, the US can't do jack since they have become hated even by people who agree with them on principle because they are so arrogant. Oh did I mention that the leader of the Islamic militants, Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys (he is on the US and the UN terrorist List) pictured below, have helped install the shari'a law (Islamic law) in regions in Somalia which include such punishments as amputations for thieves and stoning to death for serious crimes such as rape and murder. (More about the laws here) Some of the recent ones include banning World Cup Soccer, and closing down a movie theater for showing a Manchester United Soccer match (Can you say Taliban!!), these guys are not joking around! These laws were actually welcomed initially since there was no laws before them but eventually it went too far.

Augusto Pinochet 1915-2006

Ex Military Dictator of Chile is dead today. This man has polarized the county of Chile after ruling it for over 17 years. He was accused and pretty much proven to be responsible for the death of thousands of socialist, communist, and opposition leaders against his regime. He ruled with an iron fist. Surprisingly many people loved him for his ways and what he wanted to accomplish. From the Economic and Political standpoint he was able to modernize his country quicker and better than his Latin American counterparts (He was a great American ally and he believed in Free Market Capitalism). He adopted the economic style of the "Chicago Boys" in the 1970's. Here is an article that compares the routes of two dictators, Pinochet and Castro and how because they lead their countries with different economic systems has lead to different results. Interesting character for sure.

Kramer - Not so funny

The situation with Michael Richards (Kramer from the sitcom Seinfeld) and what he said at the Los Angeles Comedy show was a lot more disturbing when watched than what was reported. (Click here to watch the tirade, Warning its pretty offensive and loud). The way he used the n-word, the painful memories he brought back with comments that started with "50 years ago...." were really bad. The weird part is, everybody knows the heavy meaning of the n-word meant, everybody knows what was happening to black slaves hundreds of years ago, but ironically it took one of the funniest guys on TV in recent history to bring out the significance of the word in the most disgusting of way possible. It was tirade full of cyanide, laced with venom. To be fair Richards later apologized for his tirade.

Now as usual when any controversial event related to race pop up in the States specifically there are two groups that collide. You got the bleeding hearts, lefties, and minority groups that will yell and scream at the hint of discrimination or racism. Most of the time I think they do a disservice to the cause because when a dog barks at everything that passes buy eventually no one will pay attention to the barking even if there is a thief entering the house. People become apathetic to these minority causes because these groups make a big deal about everything. This group also ignores racist comments and attitudes thrown at white people by minorities which annoy average and civil white people. Not only that but it gives fuel to the actual racist whites. "See they act like this towards us, thats black people for you, thats Arabs for you, thats sooooo Latino man!!" they will say. Minorities should not be allowed to get away with every comment or uncivil behavior because they are a minority. Also please lets not be soooooo sensitive towards every interaction between whites and minorities, that makes everyone around tense.

The second group is the right wing, no big deal, lets keep going, don't' focus too hard on racist remarks group. I think I don't' like them even more. This is what I call the Foxnews group (its not just Foxnews but that channel is the epitome of the mindset and style used). They are so smart. Watch Fox for a bit and watch media manipulation at its best. Like in the Michael Richars situation they will not be caught dead saying something stupid like "Its freedom of speech and he has a right to say what he wants" because they know that even though technically they are right, what he did was still wrong. No, instead they will first break the shock of the comments by saying something like "Richard has some interesting remarks on stage as he breaks down because he was being heckled" so now it sounds like he said some "eye raising" comments not brutal and second it was provoked, so therefore we should not take Richard's words to be what he actually meant. The person was angry and although not justified to say what he said, he was still provoked nonetheless.

This will be followed by the argument of "Why the hell is Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle and all of them black and Latino comedians allowed to use words like 'craker, hick, redneck' with no consequence but if a white comedian uses the word 'nigger' its the end of the world??" I agree with that thought to a certain extent. It has become cool in the mainstream media (and in regular everyday life) to make fun of white people in front of white people (also white people putting themselves down and making fun of how white they are) in society today. Its not that cool. If its in good nature and there is no real implication involved then maybe. But why is Chris Rock allowed to make fun of white people and someone like Richards can't make fun of black people. The answer lies in the fact that Michael Richards a) didn't make fun of Black people...what he did was not making fun, that was a racist explosion. He just kept yelling "nigger" and he brought back history that WAS REAL. He didn't have a punchline, there was no ending, it was just a racist rant. b) Racist jokes were created equal. Thats because history hasn't treated us all equal. Its more wrong to make fun of historically oppressed people than others. Even if the level of joke is the same, making fun of the historically oppressed is a painful reminder with no real humor in it.

The closest example to how touchy the subject is jokes about women in the workplace. Imagine you tell your female co-worker who is learning a new procedure at work "This might be too hard for you, maybe you should go back to the kitchen, its more comfortable for you." Thats not funny. That hurts because it WAS REAL at one point that women were treated as such. But if you tell your male co-worker "you are just like the rest of the men, lazy, no attention to detail...." Thats more funny because it doesn't matter if men are lazy or they don't pay attention to detail but the fact is at no point in history were they treated on those basis and had to fight for their rights.

This is why Kramer's comments were ruthless. He brought out shit that hurts and it wasn't a joke. He also went back to a very touchy and hurtful part of history. Thats whats wrong with it.

War on Mosquitoes

Rick Reilly, a popular journalist for Sports Illustrated has helped launch a great program recently. Using his Last Page Article in the magazine he wrote about the nothing but net campaign. Mosquitoes, especially in rural Africa is a serious problem. It is estimated that over 1 million people died of malaria last year alone with 500 million getting sick!!! The program involves the purchasing of nets to protect people from mosquitoes that could cause malaria. So its a big deal. Its a United Nations initiative sponsored by Ted Turner (Philanthropist Billionaire, owner the Atlanta Braves, Media Mogul - CNN, Superstations, and much more).

Rick Reilly's article was such a hit that it inspired readers to donate over $1 Million in less than a month (saving over 170,000 people). Anyways, the real cool part about this program is that the complete overhead of the program is paid for by Mr. Turner ($1 billion). That means that every donation made by you goes straight into the purchase of the nets, non of your money goes towards administrative costs or anything like that. (Click on the banner to find out more)

The program asks for $10 per net. Thats Ten Bucks (less than what you would pay for pizza, two beers, a movie, T-shirt, Gas for two days, a pound of wings and a coke, etc.) you get the point. So it means a lot. Anyways please check them out. Such a good cause and the real kicker is that every cent donated goes straight into purchasing and installing the nets.

Some Facts about the damage caused by Mosquitos.
